WILMINGTON, Ohio – Rehearsals are well underway and reservations are being taken for Wilmington College-Community Summer Theatre’s production of Sunday in the Park with George. The musical will run July 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25, at 7:30 p.m., in WC’s Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.
The Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Stephen Sondheim musical is based on the neo-impressionist painting by French artist Georges-Pierre Seurat titled “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” Director Steven Haines described Sunday in the Park With George as a “highly theatrical show that celebrates the art of creation and the creation of art.” In the late 19th century, the Island of La Grande Jatte in the Seine River was a pastoral retreat from Paris’ bustling urban center. It is Seurat’s most famous painting and comes to life in the Sondheim musical.
“Through the life of the famous painter, who won’t commit to anyone or anything except his work,” Haines added, “Sondheim merges past and present into basic, poignant truths about art, creation and emotion.”
The cast features Gina Beck as Dot in the first act and as Marie in act two, and Matt Dentino portrays George Seurat in act one and George, Seurat’s fictional great-grandson, in the second act. Other actors portray dual roles as well, including: Rachel Beck, Josh Coleman, Jessica Cunigan, Claudia Fowler, Lisa Geggie. Joshua Gough, Mica Hein, Tonda Hoefler, Zach Hughes, Mark Lunsford, Emily Moroney, Mary Ann Raizk, Katie Schaad and Bryan Wallingford.
In addition to Haines as director, J. Wynn Alexander is technical director and set designer while Becky Haines is stage manager and lighting designer. Karen Miller is musical director.
