Let’s face it. Some of us are creative in an artistic way and some of us aren’t. I just happen to be one of those who isn’t. My brother was the one who could draw anything when we were growing up. I’d try my hand with the charcoal pencil, but to say the least, whatever I drew was hardly recognizable. It’s probably for that reason that I have a very profound respect for people who are artistic and the items they create. That’s why the Wilmington Art & Pottery Festival is one of the events that I look so forward to each year. And I don’t have to wait long, it takes place August 17-18.
The Festival is a great place to see one-of-a-kind art. From wall art, beautiful jewelry, functional pottery, glass art, wood art and more, there’s something new each year. I always bring home a few art treasures, but my favorite part of the festival is going around and talking to the artists, finding out how they got into what they do, how they do it and what they see in their future. This exercise takes the festival from being just another arts festival to an experience with memories that will last beyond the festival itself. It also inspires me. I may not be artistic in the true sense, but it reminds me that I can be creative in other ways.
When was the last time that a festival inspired you? Are you artsy-craftsy? Or perhaps your talent lies in something else. Seek out events that will inspire you. I invite you to the Wilmington Art & Pottery Festival. I’ll be the one camped out talking to one of the artists.
